With a population of about 3,000 people, Lead has a complement of essential services, including a grocery store, hardware store, restaurants, an active municipal library, and youth programs.
Known for its rich mining history, Lead is currently at the forefront of the science frontier at the Sanford Lab, located within the former Homestake Mine. A new research project called DUNE is slated to begin in 2018, bringing more residents and commercial activity to the area.
A remarkable 1914 opera house - currently under restoration - crowns the historic downtown district. The building hosts frequent local events, including musical performances, a film series, and a robust community theater.
